Customizing dimensions using https://source.unsplash.com

Since 2018, Medium has integrated with Unsplash.com for quickly adding royalty-free photos to your story without paying license fees.

Although brilliant, there have been occasions where the dimensions of the photo did not quite fit with the aesthetic of the story.

Maybe the photo was too square. Maybe it had too much height and not enough width. Maybe it needed to have slightly more height to match a paragraph length.

These and other reasons may have left you wondering how to make the image fit the way you would like?

Try the existing Unsplash integration within Medium to get the picture you want.

If it works in the format you would like, you’re done!

However, if you would like to customise its look, read on…

  1. Instead of using the built-in Unsplash integration within Medium, go to unsplash.com and search the same term.
  2. Click the photo you want.
The URL is unsplash.com/photos/ACoZwVwjElU

3. Copy the photo ID from URL.
> if the URL is https://unsplash.com/photos/ACoZwVwjElU, then the photo ID is ACoZwVwjElU.

4. Paste photo ID into
https://source.unsplash.com/{PHOTO ID}/{WIDTHxHEIGHT}

5. Choose dimensions that fit your purpose

e.g. when an image is open:

https://unsplash.com/photos/ACoZwVwjElU

adjust the dimensions

6. Download the photo.

7. Add the image.

8. Credit the work

The amount of effort you want to spend on getting images just right is of course up to you. If you do want a high-quality cropped version of a photo without going through editing software (and potentially losing some quality), this is a way to meet those requirements.
